Resisting Ruts & My Current Beauty Faves

A few months ago, I noticed myself getting stuck in a beauty and style rut.

I was recycling the same outfits, feeling unmotivated to try new things and uninspired by what I saw hanging in my closet. My options felt limited as my pregnant belly grew and my favorite jeans (ya know, the ones that make you feel like a million bucks?) didn’t fit by a long shot. The same thing was happening with my hair and makeup routine...I wasn’t really happy with a lot of the products I was using, my hair was beginning to feel heavy and dread-like, and my skin was up against some pretty serious pregnancy hormones, making me look like a teenager all over again.

I needed inspiration.

Now, this wasn’t an issue of personal confidence or self-love, it didn’t go that deep. But I did realize, and maybe you’ve been there too, that these areas of my life, which normally were areas of creative expression, and positive feelings, were becoming the parts of my day I dreaded the most. I wanted to just get through my morning routine as fast as I could, instead of enjoying those moments of self-care and expression.

These creative ruts can pop up in other areas of life, too.

Maybe you’ve felt stuck in your fitness routine, and the workout that used to have you jumping out of bed now feels boring and unfulfilling. Or maybe when you open your fridge and pantry, you let out a sigh, because the old recipes and ingredients feel tired and make you want to order take out instead.

I’m not suggesting anyone waste the food in their fridge or that a dramatic haircut will solve all of your problems.

New isn’t always better, and there is a difference between discontent and and just needing a little change up. Love what you have, make sure your contentment and satisfaction is in lasting, eternal things, and don’t let comparison rob your joy. But also, listen to yourself, notice where you might be stuck, and consider what needs to happen to move beyond the status quo. Staying inspired is OUR job, and it doesn’t take much to get over that hump.

For me, it all started with a walk through the aisles of Ulta. I know, so profound.

I was walking out of Starbucks after meeting someone for an afternoon appointment, and decided to pop in to the Ulta next door for a little wander. It had been a long time since I went into a store just to look around, not because I needed anything. (I’m a very efficient shopper...usually in and out, and most of that has to do with keeping myself in-budget and protecting my time.) But I had an hour and thought why not, let’s see what they’ve got!

What proceeded was by no means a spiritual experience, but in just a few minutes of sniffing, swatching, and discovering the items on the shelves, I got excited to go back home and “play” again!

That same week, I scheduled a haircut and chopped off over 12 inches! I felt invigorated. I had finally come back to the part of me I really love, the part that takes risks, has fun, doesn’t take herself too seriously, and enjoys using colors, textures, and a little extra time in the morning to express herself and feel beautiful. Because friend, sometimes you KNOW you are, but you just don’t FEEL it. Needing a little extra help there isn’t a bad thing, it’s a human thing.

Since this afternoon in Ulta and my new “do,” I’ve been really enjoying getting ready!

I know this part of my life will change in the coming weeks, as we welcome a newborn into our lives, but I feel motivated to give myself at least a few moments each day for what I now call “resist the rut” time. Whether it’s tying my short locks up in a colorful bandana, layering unexpected patterns, or trying a new eyeshadow combination...a little goes a long way!

If you’re feeling stuck...resist the rut!

Wander a store that inspires you, browse a new cookbook, watch a YouTube tutorial, sign up for a different kind of workout class than you’ve ever tried, or simply change up the scenery. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to do this and it doesn’t have to look like anyone else...just pay attention to where YOU are and take small steps to move forward.

With this refreshed sense of inspiration, I want to share with you the beauty items I have been loving lately! Maybe trying some of these will do the trick for you…

Current Beauty Faves

  • KYLIE COSMETICS Velvet Liquid Lipsticks in Heat and Savage. This liquid lip formula is the best I’ve tried (next to Kat Von D)! It does not move, goes on beautifully, and doesn’t feel dry! I really wouldn’t mind having this lipstick in every color.

  • Real Techniques Expert Face Brush. This brush, at this price point (under $10?!)...I mean c’mon. It’s a no-brainer! This brush applies my liquid foundation flawlessly.

  • Grown Alchemist Hydra-Repair Day Cream with Camellia and Geranium Blossom. I received this day cream in my last Fab Fit Fun box, and I will definitely be repurchasing when I run out (I’m already dreading the day!) I have very sensitive skin so I was nervous to try a scented day cream, but this stuff works wonders. It is light, non-greasy, sinks right into the skin, and is a great base for makeup.

  • BareMinerals BAREPRO Glow Highlighter in Free. I am living for one pump of this on the back of my hand mixed with whatever foundation I’m using that day for an all-over glowy (not greasy!) look. Especially at this time of year, my dull skin needs a winter wakeup and this liquid highlighter does just the trick!

  • Wet n Wild MegaGlo Highlighting Powder in Precious Petals. Can you tell I’m really going for a glowy look? These dreary days have me wishing for sun-kissed skin! If liquid highlighter isn’t your thing, give this crazy affordable and beautiful option a whirl.

  • DevaCurl Mist-er Right Dream Curl Refresher. I have been obsessed with DevaCurl products since my first Deva Cut last year, and this product is now in my daily lineup! A few spritzes is all it takes on day three or day four before your next wash to get curly hair looking fresh and bouncy again!

  • Michael Kors Eau de Parfum in Wonderlust. Need a new scent? Look no further! I received this scent as Christmas gift and it is undoubtedly one of my new favorites. It’s the perfect combination of romantic and sweet with a little bit of spicy! Try the roller stick if you don’t want to commit to a bottle just yet. I look forward to spraying it every morning!
